Beef can be a Healthy Option

July 4th, 2009 Guest Posted in Food | Comments Off

Everyday we are told what we should eat, what we should not eat or how frequently we should or should not eat it and with so many diets (backed by celebrities with amazing figures) it is truly amazing that we humans are able to feed ourselves at all!

One food topic that brings much confusion is eating red meat. It could be that because it is so tasty we struggle with this one. There aren’t many mouths that don’t water with the mere mention of a juicy steak. But the conflicting recommendations that we read in magazines, on the world wide web and on the television about eating beef means it has become a guilty pleasure and the health conscious to the ordinary families may opt to avoid it at all costs or spend 4 hours down the gym trying to ‘burn it off’.

“Eating beef on a daily basis is bad for you and it sits in your stomach rotting long after you have eaten it. Red meat contributes to heart disease and is full of unhealthy fats.”

Sound familiar?

Let me suggest to you that eating red meat can be a healthy option and you could actually eat a nice steak daily if you like. You see, the key to a healthy diet is simply about moderation and getting the right balance. It isn’t eating red meat that is the problem; it’s the quality of that beef and what you eat with it.

Avoid: Processed red meats such as burgers and frozen meats with additives
Instead: Choose fresh cuts of organic beef from cattle that is pasture-raised

Avoid: Eating beef with bread ie hamburgers
Instead: Serve fresh salad and vegetables with beef. These contain fat busting enzymes.

It is simple to prepare a health Steak dinner:

  1. Buy in some organic beef from a trusted retailer
  2. Grill or fry in the meats juices to how you like it
  3. Serve with a good portion of any of the following fat busting foods: Brussel Sprouts, Asparagus, Carrots, Cabbage, Beets, Celery, Cucumber, Garlic Lettuce, Radish, Horseradish, Tomato.

If you want to keep it healthy but add more flavor to your steak? Simply add crushed peppercorns, crushed garlic, mixed herbs, rosemary or other herb during cooking. Or you could marinade the beef before cooking with natural yoghurt and a mix of herbs and spices. Yum!

Shopping for an Organic Food Diet

July 4th, 2009 Guest Posted in Food | Comments Off

Whether your goal is weight loss, weight gain, or simply maintaining a healthy lifestyle, an organic food diet offers many benefits. Even if going fully organic isn’t possible for you, it is still beneficial to eat organic food whenever possible.

What exactly is organic? Organic foods are produced without the use of most synthetic chemical pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. Organic meats come from animals that were raised without being given growth hormones or routinely being treated with antibiotics. Animals raised organically are also generally treated more humanely.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) controls organic certification in the U.S. In order to be certified as organic, the land on which the food is produced has to be documented as being free from chemicals, usually for at least three years. Sewage sludge is not allowed as fertilizer in organic fields, and genetically modified organisms do not qualify as organic.

Local farms and farmers’ markets are great sources for organic foods. Grocery stores and even Wal-Mart stores have begun to carry organic foods, including produce. It is particularly important in these venues to verify that only certified organic foods are represented as organic.

Foods that are processed can be labeled as organic if the required percentage of ingredients is organic. This means that while the organic version would be desirable over its nonorganic counterpart; wise shoppers still must read labels.

There may be additives in processed foods that not only are not organic, but also not desirable for other reasons as well. The USDA has produced a seal that shows either 100% organic content, or simply, USDA Organic, which means the contents must be at least 95% organic.

Like all things mass produced, commercially grown foods are less expensive than organics, but have less nutritional content, in addition to having the harmful additives that in most cases cannot be completely removed even with thorough washing attempts.
