The results were adjusted for other risk factors, including smoking.

It’s great news too for the British, who consume on average 14 kilograms per person of sugar confectionery each year.OK, that’s not just chocolate, but includes chocolate biscuits, Jaffa cakes, chocolate digestives, Easter Eggs etc. In contrast, and not as you would expect, the average American only eats around 6.5 kilograms of the stuff in the same period.

Although the test included both chocolate and sweets, the researchers believe chocolate is the key life extender because it contains substances that protect against heart disease and cancer. Chocolate, like red wine, is believed to contain chemicals called phenols. These can also be found in strawberries, and is why people first started putting them in champagne glasses as they counteract the harmful effects of alchol. They reduce free radicals that damage cells and DNA. The process of chocolate making from the cacao plant may also restrict the formation of the type of cholesterol which damages the heart as well as boosting the immune system.

However, as most food books will tell you, chocolate is high in calories and eating too much can make you fat, thereby actually increasing your risk of heart disease. So the startling truth, as with all these medical/diet/nutrition scare stories, appears to be “moderation in everything” is the key to a long and happy life. One of the easiest ways to let someone know you’ve been thinking of him or her is to bring a gift of food. I, for one, always love to get something that will satisfy my sweet tooth. Foolproof Chocolate Fudge is the perfect gift.

Foolproof means exactly what it says. And this fudge is so easy to whip up. Only you will know just how easy it was. I’d like to share this great recipe with you now.

I always think of my sister any time I see chocolate truffles on display. I have given these as a gift to her many times and she’s always thrilled when she opens the package. I, however, wanted to try my hand at making a batch of easy homemade chocolate truffles and get her opinion, since she’s the number one chocoholic that I know. I took them to her for a taste test and needless to say, I didn’t get to bring any home with me!


In a heavy saucepan melt chocolate chips and milk over low heat to prevent scorching. When thoroughly blended and melted, remove from heat. Stir in vanilla and nuts.

In a heavy saucepan on low heat, melt butter. Add cocoa powder and stir until blended. Mix in sweetened condensed milk. Stir until thick and shiny – around 4 minutes or so.

Remove from heat and stir in the extract. Chill around 3-4 hours. When cool shape into balls. You may roll the balls into either the cocoa powder or chocolate sprinkles for an extra chocolate kick.
